Roles and Responsibility of the Social/Nonprofit Sector in Society
Workshop
Roots, development, growth, and current critical issues of the nonprofit sector in the US are discussed. Course is designed to enhance participants’ understanding of and appreciation for the role of the charitable sector in meeting the diverse needs of communities in the United States and to give participants an opportunity to explore their own roles and responsibilities as leaders of nonprofit organizations.
Governance and Leadership
Workshop
Participants will consider the practical application of several styles of nonprofit governance, legal and ethical responsibilities of the Board of Directors, interactions between the Board of Directors, the Executive Director, and Staff. Bylaws and legal documents as well as leadership styles, organizational culture, structure, and life-stages as they relate to governance are investigated. Participants will have opportunities to discuss their experiences and seek input from the group.
Strategic Planning and Implementation
Workshop
This practical workshop provides the guidelines and tools to produce a Strategic Plan that is always relevant, realistic and flexible. It explains how to customize the planning process to suit the nature and needs of an organization, so that all Board members, employees and stakeholders have strong buy-in to the process and the Plan. It shares easy-to-reference tools to ensure the Plan is implemented and progress toward goals is continually measured.
Financial Management
Workshop
2-day class 12 hours Day 1: Financial Management Part I: Internal Tools General accounting practices, common terminology, and the differences in accounting in nonprofit and for-profit organizations will be reviewed. Focus will be on budget development, tools for reporting to the Board, internal dissemination of financial data such as cash flows, comparison to budget, and understanding the balance sheet and other financial statements. Ideas for accounting software will be shared. Participants will spend part of the day working on a budget for their own organization or based on a case study. Day 2: Financial Management Part II: Audits and External Reporting All nonprofit organizations have legally required external reporting. This course will review differences in reporting requirements for different types of organizations to governmental entities and to funders. Generally accepted handling of contributions, grants, sponsorships, etc. will be explained. Guidance will be given on how to prepare for an audit, what auditors are looking for, and how to get the most benefit from an audit. Examples of auditor reports and 990s will be reviewed and discussed. Participants are encouraged to bring a copy of their organization’s 990 and audit.
Program Development, Implementation, and Evaluation
Workshop
The processes for development and implementation of specific programing in a nonprofit organization will be discussed as well as the evaluation of program outcomes for clients and the program’s impact on the community. Participants will consider the use of research and theory of change in developing the program as well as evaluation methodologies and practical tools for measuring program success. Budgeting and staffing for programs will also be discussed.
Managing Staff and Volunteers
Workshop
Human resources are a nonprofit’s most valuable asset and often represent more than half the organization’s budget. Managing and stewarding this critical human asset is an important nonprofit leadership skill. This session will consider the hiring, management, and stewardship of both staff and volunteers as a means of accomplishing the organization’s mission. Legal issues as well as organizational culture will be considered as part of the management of your organizations human resources.
Communications and Marketing
Workshop
Participants will consider how their organization is viewed by the public. They will look at crafting a mission message, maintaining an organization’s brand, getting the intended message out, managing both positive and negative publicity, and developing an inclusive marketing/communication plan. Print advertising, social media as well as other communication strategies will be investigated as components of marketing and communications for an organization. Scenarios will be used for in-class activities.

Additional Information

This program will provide the fundamentals required for leading and managing a nonprofit organization and will enhance a current nonprofit leader’s ability in that role. Executive Directors, Program Directors, Board members, and others who are interested in learning about the joys and challenges of working in the social sector are encouraged to participate. Workshops are interactive, encouraging participants to learn from each other as well as from the instructor. Workshops cover the core areas identified by most councils of nonprofits in their principles and practice recommendations including: societal roles and responsibilities, governance, strategic planning, financial management, program development and assessment, employee management, communication and marketing.
